Reusable Plastic boxes vs. Cardboard
A Problem
The amount of waste created by one tonne of cardboard is incredible. During the production process some 17 trees lose their lives, more than 7,000 gallons of water are washed down the drain and more than 4,000 kw per hour of electricity are needed to produce (and that just one tonne). The majority of these future cardboard boxes will be used twice and then thrown out.
Two out of every three yards of a landfill are taken up by cardboard. Although much has been done in manufacturing to reduce such heavy carbon footprints, the CO2 culprit in the supply chain is still the typical cardboard box.
There is also the question of the tape being used on cardboard boxes. While many suppliers are happy to provide cardboard storage boxes which are recyclable (up to a point), the fact remains that these boxes always have to be re-enforced and secured with tape - which is not made from environmentally friendly plastic. Using string is time consuming and invariably your movers either manage to break or tear the string or the string will simply slip off; spilling your belongings everywhere.
A Solution
Just 80 green recyclable, reusable plastic boxes used during multi-trip journeys are the carbon footprint equivalent of some 1,200 one-time-only cardboard boxes.
Although many supermarkets and hardware stores sell plastic storage boxes, they are rarely the right size and rarely recyclable. Storage boxes sold with plastic lids seem a great idea at first, but the cost of them can be prohibitive, when the average one bedroom property needs at least 20 such boxes.
